The controversial dismissal of Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Buttler headlined the Kings XI Punjab’s 14-run victory in Monday’s Indian Premier League clash at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Buttler was run out at the non-striker’s end by bowler and opposition captain Ravichandran Ashwin. The Englishman was the victim of a so-called ‘Mankading’ – a rare occurrence named after Indian player Vinoo Mankad.

This was not the first time Buttler was ‘Mankaded’ in international cricket. Sri Lanka spinner  Sachithra Senanayake removed him in such fashion during the fifth ODI at Edgbaston five years ago.

Monday saw West Indian recruit Chris Gayle power Punjab to a final total of 184 for four. Gayle struck 79 from 47 deliveries, which featured eight fours and a quartet of towering sixes. He was well supported by the homegrown Sarfaraz Khan’s unbeaten 46 from 29.

The Royals later moved to 148 for two, but slipped to 164 for eight – and were ultimately limited to 170 for nine.

The result pushed the Kings XI Punjab to second position in the 2019 tournament’s eight-team standings, while Rajasthan moved to seventh.

Tuesday will see the Delhi Capitals host the Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
