Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada will go head to head

Lungi Ngidi, who has played just three T20 Internationals for South Africa, has been bought by the Chennai Super Kings for the IPL.

The 21-year-old, who has played 39 franchise T20s and made his debut for the Test team in the latest series against India, was snapped up for $78,000. He has a best of 4-19 in the second T20I against Sri Lanka in January last year and has recently been called up for the Proteas ODI squad for the India series.

Ngidi will go head to head against Kagiso Rabada who was retained by the Delhi Daredevils, using their right-to-match card at more than $650,000.

It signals the new era of South Africa bowling, for there were no bids for Dale Steyn, a true and loyal servant of the IPL for many years, or for Morne Morkel.

JP Duminy, who was recently called up for the Proteas, goes to the Mumbai Indians for a cut-price $150,000. Duminy last played for the Delhi Daredevils, and has also previously played for his current team.

Surprisingly, the Warriors’ Colin Ingram, now taking the Big Bash by storm was unsold.

There was disappointment for a number of South African hopefuls, including Andile Phehlukwayo and Aiden Markram. Both were unsold, as were Jon-Jon Smuts,  Marchant de Lange, Dane Paterson, David Wiese, Kyle Abbott and Tabraiz Shamsi.
