Sai Sudharsan hit 96 runs as defending champions Gujarat Titans reached 214-4 against Chennai Super Kings in the final of the Indian Premier League on Monday.
The left-handed Indian batsman Sudharsan, who had never played for his country before, destroyed the bowling during his 47-ball innings in Ahmedabad. He and the team’s captain, Hardik Pandya, put up an attacking stand of 81 runs together.
The final, which was moved to a reserve day because of rain on Sunday, is likely to be the last game MS Dhoni plays as a player.
After a rainout upset a lot of fans, they left the world’s largest cricket stadium, which holds 132,000 people, wearing Dhoni’s yellow jersey.
When 41-year-old Dhoni won the toss in his 250th IPL game, the crowd cheered loudly. However, it was the in-form Shubman Gill’s 20-ball 39 that made the crowd cheer even louder.
Gill was on three when Deepak Chahar dropped an easy catch by fast bowler Tushar Deshpande. This was right after Gill hit his third century of the season in the last playoff, and he leads the batting list with 890 runs.
The opener hit Deshpande for three straight boundaries in the next over and kept hitting the ball over the fence until Ravindra Jadeja stumped the batsman thanks to Dhoni’s lightning-fast glovework.
Wriddhiman Saha, another opener, scored 54 runs, and he and Sudharsan added 64 runs together. After his partner left, Sudharsan took charge.
He got to 50 in 33 balls, and then he went off on Deshpande, hitting him for a six and four fours in a 20-run over. In his unbeaten 12-ball 21, Pandya joined the blitz.
Slingshot-action Matheesha Pathirana, a fast bowler from Sri Lanka, stopped Sudharsan from getting his hundred, even though he hit seven sixes. However, Gujarat, who won the title in their first season last year, put up a tough total.
