Paul Stirling and Curtis Campher hit centuries as Ireland posted their highest Test score of 492 against Sri Lanka on Tuesday afternoon.

Stirling had 103 points and Campher had 111 when they were both bowled out just before tea on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. On the first day, captain Andy Balbirnie had scored 95 points.

Lorcan Tucker did well with 80 runs, and Prabath Jayasuriya, the hero of the first Test for Sri Lanka, took five wickets for 174 runs. Both Asitha Fernando and Vishwa Fernando were responsible for two wickets.

Ireland has only been able to play Test games since 2017, and so far they have lost all five of them.

The previous best score in a Test was 339, which Pakistan scored in their first match in 2018.

Stirling had to leave the game on Monday because of cramps because it was so hot and humid, but he came back on Tuesday after Tucker was out.

Stirling’s first Test hundred was a big deal. He hit Asitha Fernando for six over deep point with an upper-cut. He now has hundreds in all three ways the game can be played.

Soon after, the same bowler got Stirling out for 103 when the batsman hit a short ball into the hands of Dhananjaya de Silva at fine leg.

Jayasuriya got his third wicket of the game when De Silva dove to catch Campher at first slip.

By an innings and 280 runs, Ireland lost the first Test.
