Virat Kohli was in impressive form after his 113 runs inspired India to a 373-7 against Sri Lanka in the opening one-day international on Tuesday.

In his 87-ball innings, the cricket superstar evaded two dropped catches on 52 and 81 after India were asked to bat first at the start of the three-match series in Guwahati.

Rohit Sharma (83) and Shubman Gill (70) combined for 143 runs to lay the groundwork for the mammoth total.

Despite losing partners at the other end, Kohli faced the opposition attack with 12 fours and one six after the departure of the pair.

The former captain celebrated his 45th ODI century and 73rd across all formats by ripping off his helmet and roaring as he basked in the stadium’s applause.

The star batsman finally fell to quick Kasun Rajitha, who was also bowling when wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis and captain Dasun Shanaka dropped him.

Gill hit three consecutive boundaries off of left-arm debutant quick Dilshan Madushanka in the fourth over, and Rohit smashed two sixes and a four off of Rajitha to initiate the batting charge.

Rohit, who returned to captain the team after missing India’s 2-1 Twenty20 series victory, reached his fifty with a four and Gill soon followed suit.

Gill faced Dunith Wellalage with three consecutive fours in one over before falling lbw to Shanaka’s medium-pace bowling in the next.

Rohit attempted to maintain the attack with consistent fours, but Madushanka ended his innings with a length delivery that bowled the Indian captain off an inside edge.

The remainder of the innings belonged to Kohli, who has scored two consecutive ODI hundreds since emerging from a lengthy dry spell last year.
