Justin Langer says taking over as Australia head coach would be ‘complicated’ as he ponders the possibility of the role.

The Western Australia coach has been tipped as the favourite to succeed Darren Lehmann, who resigned amid the ball-tampering scandal against the Proteas.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie are also in line for the role but Langer, who has built up a good record in domestic cricket with Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL), leads the conversation.

Talking to PerthNow, Langer acknowledged the possibility of him replacing Lehmann.

‘If the opportunity came up, there would be a lot to consider. The complication is that I love my job. I love my job here. I love being on the board of the West Coast Eagles [football team]. I love being with my family all the time.

‘[Coaching Australia] would mean [being away] 11 months of the year. I love working at the WACA and working with the Scorchers. My family is all in Perth. I am a Perth boy and I love being home. So that’s why it is complicated.

‘I’m also involved with five or six charities here in WA. And walking away from all that is not that easy to do. I have a great life as we speak.’

Langer was selected by Cricket Australia to take charge of the national side for their ODI tour of the West Indies in 2016 when Lehmann took some time off.
