Former Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat has been named as one of nine members on an interim CSA board, confirmed by Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Friday.

Mthethwa addressed members of the media in Pretoria to announce the new temporary board after former acting president Beresford Williams and five other board members resigned last Sunday after desperate calls to step down.

The nine-member board was comprised by the department of Sport, the Members’ Council and the South African Cricketers’ Association (Saca) during this week, based on recommendations by the Nicholson report.

Lorgat, who resigned from the organisation ahead of the inaugural T20 Global League back in 2017, will be joined by Saca president Omphile Ramela, former Cape Cobras CEO Andre Odendaal, Judith February, Nkeko Caroline Mampuru, Dr Stavros Nikalo, Andile Dawn Mbatha, Xolani Vonya and judge Zak Yaqoob, who will also be the chairperson of the board

In his speech Mthethwa said he hopes the new interim team will help stabilise cricket and restore the integrity of CSA after he was left frustrated by the former board’s refusal to initially step down, despite numerous calls by his department and Sascoc.

‘There was no way that Cricket South Africa was in a position to self-correct,’ he said.

‘I finally decided it was time to intervene. I conceded it advisable to inform, as a matter of curtesy, the ICC of my intended intervention. I also thought that I should give Cricket South Africa yet another opportunity at that point to make representations to me as to why I should not intervene.’

Mthethwa added that the CSA AGM, which was already postponed to 5 December, will most likely be postponed again until a later stage.
