Minister of Sport Nathi Mthethwa has instructed his department to withdraw the notice from the Government Gazette regarding his interference with Cricket South Africa.

This comes after Mthethwa received official notice from the organisation that the members’ council unanimously accepted the adoption of a new memorandum of incorporation (MOI).

Mthethwa invoked article 13 of the National Sports Act last week to interfere at CSA following drama that unfolded with the council.

At a recent Special General Meeting, the council initially voted against the amendment of the MOI, which paves the way for a majority independent board.

But, after Mthethwa’s indication that he would use his powers as minister to strip CSA as the official authority governing body of cricket in the country, pressure mounted on the council to reconsider their vote.

‘As the sole purpose of my intervention into the affairs of CSA was to facilitate a negotiated solution in respect of governance best practice, I have, based on the confirmation from CSA’s acting president and IB [Interim Board] chairperson, instructed my department to immediately initiate the requisite process to withdraw the notice,’ read a statement from Mthethwa on Friday.

The minister hopes to bring his intervention into matters at CSA to an official end now.
