AB de Villiers

A Spartans outfit, somewhat more confident after victory over the Jozi Stars, take on a Blitz unit eager to bounce back from defeat to the Rocks and a washout with the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants as the Mzansi Super League returns to SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Tshwane Spartans

The Spartans have seemingly finally clicked, and having lifted themselves from the bottom of the six-team standings, have a chance to avenge the defeat they suffered at the hands of the Blitz in the tournament opener. The Blitz have since become the title favourites, but opportunity knocks to keep them down at their lowest point. After winning four on the trot, they’ve now still got those four wins in six attempts. AB de Villiers, as always, will be entirely key – but Dean Elgar showed earlier this week that he is able, and then some, in limited-overs cricket. The Spartans, too, will be mindful of the important role Elgar can play alongside fellow spinner Sean Williams.

Cape Town Blitz

The Blitz have been hampered by the news that Anrich Nortje will not be returning from injury for the rest of the tournament. He was vital during the opening throes of their campaign, but Dale Steyn’s presence lessens the blow somewhat. The Cape Town outfit need to learn from the Jozi Stars, who let the Tshwane spinners dictate proceedings for far too long on Wednesday. Proteas duo Quinton de Kock and Andile Phehlukwayo have to deliver.

De Villiers vs Steyn

The much-vaunted battle between De Villiers and Kagiso Rabada didn’t get off the ground earlier this week, but the talismanic batsman and speedster Steyn can have it out on a deck that should provide an even contest between bat and ball.

Prediction

The Spartans have a bit of momentum on their side, while the last couple of results for the Blitz have been rather stop-start, leaving the hosts the likely winners of this one.

Where to next

The Spartans will stay in Centurion to meet the Rocks on Wednesday, while the Blitz will head back to a Cape Town clash with the Stars on Tuesday.
