Much like when AB de Villiers plays for the Royal Bangalore Challengers in the Indian Premier League, the Spartans are in danger of becoming known as a ‘batting’ side. This one-dimensionalism won’t suffice for a franchise that is effectively routed in the Titans – South Africa’s most successful set-up in recent years. They must not smart from defeat to the Durban Heat – and instead find the gumption that got them over the line against the Paarl Rocks.

Nelson Mandela Bay Giants

While their recent fixture against the Blitz didn’t result in victory, it again assured the Giants have the ability to compete in this tournament. Marco Marais and Jon-Jon Smuts’ collective contribution at the top of the order was particularly important, after a sluggish start in the opening matches. They can capitalise against a Spartans outfit that was banking on the services of Lungi Ngidi, who has since been sidelined by injury. Replacement Corbin Bosch’s call-up was arguably out of the blue – and he might just be the bowler to target.

Maiden outing for Centurion

This will be SuperSport Park’s first Mzansi Super League fixture – and a chance to impress where Durban’s Kingsmead and St George’s Park’s Port Elizabeth haven’t yet. The deck should yield some high scores, while not quite imbalancing the contetst between bat and ball.

Prediction

The Spartans have got their early losses out the way – and should put one over a Giants unit that ostensibly doesn’t deserve second position on the log at the moment.

The Spartans will stay in Centurion to face the Jozi Stars on Wednesday, while the Giants will head back to PE to meet the Blitz on Tuesday.
