Former Proteas assistant coach Enoch Nkwe has been appointed as CSA director of cricket.

The 39-year-old worked under head coach Mark Boucher at the Proteas before resigning in August 2021. He claimed he had been “undermined” and reduced to being a “cones boy” in a “toxic working environment”.

Nkwe fills the vacancy left by Graeme Smith, who did not reapply for the position when his contract expired in March. In April, Smith was cleared of all racism allegations levelled against him by CSA’s Social Justice and Nation-Building report.

Nkwe, a former provincial cricketer with the Lions between 2004 and 2009, won both the CSA T20 Challenge and 4-Day Series in his first year as Lions coach in 2018. He also led the Jozi Stars to victory in the inaugural Mzansi Super League that year.

Nkwe served as the Proteas interim team director on their tour to India in 2019, but missed out on the head coach position when Smith instead opted for Boucher.
