Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has reflected on the disappointing past season during which South Africa won only one of a handful of series.

What started with a daunting tour of India in September, led to another great test of character for a new-look Proteas camp over the summer as England and Australia visited South Africa.

Rabada featured prominently in a struggling Proteas team that also suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat in the Test series by Joe Root’s charges.

CSA delighted with government ruling

‘The past season was a disappointment. Even though I reflect and see that my stats were ‘OK’, I just felt really rusty and just a bit out of place,’ said the 25-year-old.

‘But, I realised it was never supposed to be easy and I’m trying to take it day by day to achieve my new sets of goals.’

Rabada suffered a groin injury during the T20I series against Australia, which subsequently ruled him out for the ODI series that followed.

He also wasn’t part of the limited-overs squad that travelled to India in March, before the tour was abandoned due to the growing risk of the coronavirus.

The paceman, though, has since made a steady recovery from the niggle and is very much ready to hit his straps again once action resumes.

‘I wasn’t doing much, I was just doing rehab. Fortunately, that has now healed and I haven’t been doing any technical work apart from the rehab.’

Given his significant workload over the past couple of seasons, Rabada is grateful for the opportunity to take an extended rest from the game, despite the cruel circumstances that led to the global pandemic.

‘I am just really glad that I can get a rest, not in the way that it has come, but getting the rest is really good and I am really enjoying my time. It has also allowed me to think about what I really want and makes it easier to set goals,’ he added.
