Chris Morris believes that the fight shown by the Proteas in the second T20 shows their fans that the team still cares about playing for South Africa.

In the wake of a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, Morris hopes that the character shown to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against England says a lot about what it means for the players to represent the country.

‘As a team we deserve it. As a country we deserve to show back home that we still really care about playing for South Africa,’ he told the media after the Proteas’ thrilling three-run victory.

‘I think there’s a lot to play for. First and foremost, there is the honour of playing for South Africa and the honour of playing international cricket. Not many people get to live the dream that we’re living at the moment,’ he remarked.

Morris also commended the performance of England debutant Tom Curran, who impressed with his figures of 3-33 in his four overs.

I played with Tom [Curran] at Surrey and he is a seriously talented young man. For him to execute his plans today and as well as he did today under pressure, I can only take my hat off to him,’ said Morris.

‘He’s taken a lot of wickets for Surrey over the last couple of years, done well for the England A side and it’s especially nice to see a guy that I played with coming through the ranks and doing nicely, so I’m very pleased for him,’ he added.

Finally, the 30-year-old dedicated the victory to head coach Russell Domingo, who has flown home to be with his mother, who was injured in a car accident.

‘I think there was a lot for Russell. He’s going through a really tough time, his mom is not well and it hurts, it’s never a nice time of your life to deal with that so, you know, coach this one is for you,’ Morris said.

The Proteas play England in the T20 series decider in Cardiff on Sunday.
