The Proteas’ first match of the T20 World Cup in Australia next year will be against India.

The fixtures and match-ups for the tournament were finalised recently, following the completion of the qualifier event in the United Arab emirates.

‘We are thrilled to be welcoming Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland to Australia for the T20 World Cup 2020,’ said local organising committee chief executive officer Nick Hockley.

‘We know that all 16 teams will receive the warmest welcome and fantastic support from fans living here in Australia and those visiting from around the world.’

The Proteas and India will play at Perth Stadium on 24 October. Six days later, South Africa will face England at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Fixtures against Afghanistan and two qualifiers will follow for the Proteas through November.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock captained the Proteas during the recent T20I series against India in the absence of regular skipper Faf du Plessis.

‘I am not too concerned about the captaincy possibly affecting my batting, to be honest. It is a new stepping stone in my career and it gives me extra responsibility. I am not sure if it will affect me negatively or positively,” De Kock said at the time.

‘I think Faf gave me a lot of room to play the way I wanted to. I don’t see why that would change without them being here.’
