Tabraiz Shamsi took four wickets as the Proteas bowled a Victoria XI out for 258 in their 50-over match at the MCG on Saturday.
Originally supposed to be a two-day match, it was changed to a one-day encounter to give the fast bowlers more time to refresh ahead of the third Test starting in Adelaide next week.
It was mostly seen as an opportunity for the batsmen to find their feet against the pink ball, but Shamsi had other ideas, taking 4-72 from his 12 overs as he pushes for a Test debut ahead of incumbent spinner Keshav Maharaj.
Kagiso Rabada was his usual best up front with three quick wickets, but the spinners dominated from there, with Maharaj picking up 1-40 and JP Duminy striking late with 2-36.
The pacemen were used sparingly with Vernon Philander rested altogether, but Morné Morkel bowled nine overs – more than any other fast bowler – as he aims to push his way into the starting XI next week.
Seb Gotch, Matthew Short and Evan Gulbis all struck fifties before their side were bowled out inside 46 overs.
