Proteas captain Temba Bavuma says he is very excited about the depth of strength among his bowlers after they secured a 284-run win on the fourth day of the second Test at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
However, he lamented that a young team would not play another Test until the end of the year, when they will host India.
Our batting remains a challenge but when these guys (the bowlers) click we always have chances in the game,” said Bavuma, who was named man of the match after scoring a career-best 172 in the second innings.
He said rookie Gerald Coetzee, 22, had impressed in his first two Tests. “He brings that pace and aggression that we want in our attack.”
Coetzee joins Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Marco Jansen in a battery. Bavuma stated that he held Lungi Ngidi in high regard despite the fact that he was not selected for the series.
Despite Rabada and Coetzee being the only frontline bowlers to play twice, South Africa won the series 2-0.
Saturday, the West Indies were bowled out for 106 after needing 391 to win.
Bavuma explained that the selection of spin bowlers Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj on a pitch that has historically favored fast bowlers was warranted by their performance on Saturday in favorable conditions.
When the West Indies collapsed to 34 for six in the 8.1 overs leading up to lunch, the match was effectively won and lost.
