South African left-arm spin bowler Keshav Maharaj is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury during the Proteas’ 284-run win over the West Indies in the second Test in Johannesburg.

Maharaj “has a complete rupture of his left Achilles tendon” and will see a surgeon on Monday, according to Cricket South Africa.

After celebrating the dismissal of Kyle Mayers shortly before lunch on the fourth day, Maharaj, 33, fell to the ground in obvious pain. He was removed from the field on a stretcher.

Since making his Test debut in 2016, Maharaj has been South Africa’s premier spin bowler, but he has only recently become a regular member of the one-day international squad.

South Africa have no scheduled Test matches until December, but his injury will prevent him from playing in the one-day series against the West Indies, which begins on Thursday in East London, and could put him in doubt for the October World Cup in India.

Prior to his injury, Maharaj bowled only 2.5 overs, but his two wickets for four runs accelerated the West Indian collapse to 106 all out.
