Former Proteas coach Gary Kirsten says there is no answer as to why the national side continues to struggle at major ICC tournaments.
On Sunday, the Proteas will take on Pakistan in a match that is more about finding some redemption than anything else after effectively being knocked out of the World Cup following last Wednesday’s defeat to New Zealand.
Kirsten, who led India to the 2011 World Cup title as coach before spending spell in charge of the Proteas team, admitted it was impossible to put a finger on the reason for the South African side’s ongoing troubles at showpiece events.
‘We’ve exhausted that conversation. I don’t know and nobody knows what the answers are. What more can you say?’ he said as reported by Sport24.
‘We’ve all tried different approaches and it’s tough to know what the answers are. It’s amazing. The World Cup comes around and the mist comes in and everyone talks about it.
‘The only way we’ll turn it around is when somewhere down the line they get it right.’
Kirsten added that the Proteas had looked a little ‘light’ in terms of their batting firepower.
‘AB de Villiers at No 4 probably would have made a big difference,’ he said half-jokingly.
‘I thought we actually played the game really well, but I’ve always felt that we are a little bit light, batting-wise. Do we look like a team that can go and get 380?’
