Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith has played down speculation that he has already signed a deal that will make him the country’s director of cricket.
The Sunday Times ran a headline that screamed ‘Captain Fantastic is back. Graeme Smith appointed CSA’s Director of Cricket’, but the truth of the matter, as confirmed by Smith himself on Monday, is that no deal has yet been agreed. [Read that story HERE!]
‘Contrary to media reports I have not been appointed director of cricket by CSA,’ said Smith.
‘As previously advised, I withdrew my application for the role. I am, however, in ongoing discussions with CSA, but I still have real concerns, which I have reiterated to them.’
Smith was interviewed for the director of cricket post last month, but later withdrew interest. The position is currently held in an acting capacity by former coach Corrie van Zyl, who is suspended.
