Proteas all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has reiterated his dream to add a few more Test matches, while admitting the four previous appearances were rather challenging.

Phehlukwayo has become a consistent competitor for South Africa in the limited-overs formats over the years, contributing with both bat and ball at crucial stages for the team.

With more than 50 ODI caps to his name already, the 24-year-old has often helped the Proteas out of trouble and having been to last year’s World Cup, he has emerged as one of the new senior members in the setup.

But, Phehlukwayo is still eager to have a crack at playing Test cricket, having last featured in red-ball cricket against India at the Wanderers back in 2018.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, he made his ambitions clear to play Test cricket once again for the Proteas.

‘It was hard. Test cricket is way more difficult than white-ball cricket, mentally, physically and even emotionally, but I want a few Test caps to my name, it’s on my wish list. I need to get the numbers up and perform. That’s how it is. People get into teams on potential or numbers,’ said Phehlukwayo.

The Durbanite made his debut in the longer format against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom in September 2017 but fell out of favour somewhat for the bigger series’ as the Test team often went without a recognised all-rounder, something that is still evident this year.

‘I played a few games for the Dolphins last season and I didn’t always bowl a lot because we were preparing the pitches for spinners and for home advantage, but I got a few 60s with the bat. Every game, I feel like I am improving. I’m going to play for them a bit more this next season and then we will see what the future holds,’ he added.
