The Proteas Women claimed an emphatic 10-wicket victory over West Indies in their World Cup clash on Sunday.
Seeking their second win in three matches after their last match was rained out against New Zealand, the Proteas won the toss and chose to field first.
Two early wickets by Shabnim Ismail gave the Proteas the perfect start. Marizanne Kapp gave Ismail fantastic support, dismissing Boyce for just four. Kapp’s best was yet to come when she took another off her very next ball. Though the hat-trick ball was a dot, another victim off the penultimate ball of her over left West Indies in disarray at 16-5.
A brief period of resistance followed, which saw 22 runs added before Dane van Niekerk brought herself on to bowl to try and keep the Windies under the pump. She did exactly that by striking off the last ball of the 20th over.
It was a procession from there. Van Niekerk bowled three further wicket-maidens while Kapp also ensured that the islanders added just ten more runs to their total for the loss of the final four wickets, West Indies all out for a measly 48.
South Africa openers Laura Wolvaardt (19) and Lizelle Lee (29) proceeded to make light work of the incredibly low total. The pair smashed nine boundaries between them, compounding the West Indies misery even further. When Wolvaardt hit a boundary off Deandra Dottin in the seventh over, South Africa had completed the second fasted run-chase in Women’s World Cup history.
With the win, the Proteas have five points from three matches.
