After a weekend of FA Cup action that left some big names out of the draw for the fifth round, it’s back to the hurly-burly of the English Premiership, writes GARY LEMKE.
Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton, Newcastle, Burnley and West Ham were the Premiership clubs to fall by the wayside – although for some of them, Burnley being an example – an exit from the FA Cup allows the club to focus on Premiership survival. Burnley were routed 5-0 by Manchester City, and afterwards manager Sean Dyche made no bones about the fact he would quickly get over the result and turn his attention to staying up.
Burnley sit three points off the relegation zone, and things don’t get easier for them as they travel to Old Trafford to take on a Manchester United team still bouncing after winning their first eight games under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Superbru punters are sure to view this as a banker in their predictions, and it is hard to see anything other than three points for United. In doing so, they will further ramp up the pressure on Arsenal (sitting in fifth on 44 points, ahead of United only on goal difference) and a stuttering Chelsea, three points ahead and in the Champions League fourth slot.
To stay ahead of Man United, Arsenal will need to beat visiting Cardiff City, although Chelsea’s trip away to Bournemouth is considerably trickier. Chelsea eased past Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, but ‘Sarri-ball’ isn’t pleasing the fans, as there remains no direct attacking, with the players going coast to coast a lot more than towards goal.
Leaders Liverpool have that four-point cushion and they will be expected to keep the gap when they host Leicester City, while Manchester City travel to Newcastle.
There are a couple of tricky encounters, one being Wolves hosting a West Ham side that is proving to be one of the most inconsistent in the Premiership. Their last seven matches have gone W, L, W, L, D, W, L and they were knocked out of the FA Cup by AFC Wimbledon at the weekend. However, they are just as capable of bouncing back with a ‘W’ here.
Bottom-placed Huddersfield have only won twice from their 23 matches so far, and will be desperate to get something from their home tie against Everton, while Fulham need to beat Brighton at Craven Cottage, because if they don’t, then the reality is that they are staring relegation in the face.
Tottenham are missing Harry Kane and Dele Alli through injury, while Son Heung-min returns to London following Korea’s quarter-final exit to Qatar in the Asian Cup. Spurs weren’t active in the pre-season transfer window, nor have they been in the January one, and fatigue is creeping in. They host a physical Watford side who are leading the ‘best of the rest’ behind the top six ‘big clubs’, and this encounter looks a potential upset.
