Never before have a dozen rounds of English Premier League matches been played with three teams still unbeaten, writes GARY LEMKE.
With Manchester City in such imperious form – they are a match for any team in Europe – talk is understandably around whether they can join Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ and go through a League season unbeaten. This weekend they have a tough task away to West Ham, who it must be remembered, have held Chelsea and beaten Manchester United at home and are managed by Manuel Pellegrini, who took City to the title himself.
I’m expecting City to win, but have gone 2-1 and I don’t think they will run away with this game.
Their chasers, Liverpool and Chelsea, are also away this weekend, but Chelsea’s task looks far tougher than Liverpool’s. Chelsea travel to Wembley to take on a Spurs side that will be knocking on the door of the top four at the end of the season. This season has been exactly as I called before the first round: I wrote that I expected Man City to win, with Liverpool second, followed by Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Man United.
Spurs have the prolific Harry Kane leading the line and I’m banking him to score against Chelsea, but the visitors are a steely bunch this season and will respond even if they fall behind. I’ve gone the draw, but won’t be surprised to see Chelsea sneak the three points.
Liverpool’s task against Watford is easier, at first glance, and I’m expecting the Reds to come away with the points and keep a clean sheet, which is what has made them so different from last season to this one.
Down the bottom of the table things will get messy for Fulham if they lose at home to Southampton, themselves in trouble, with word on the street being that if Fulham beat them, that’s the end of Mark Hughes’ stint as Saints manager. This is a match that one could call the proverbial six-pointer, and all three results are live possibilities. That would be the way to bet if one’s involved in the Soccer13 pools.
The bookies have five teams as odds-on, which to their mind means that’s at least five matches where you should have no problem picking the winner: Liverpool, Man City, Everton, Man United and Wolves.
Dylan Appolis is leading the SportsClub panel and he’s also in the top 1% of Global Superbru players. It’s a great achievement and as a Global winner all I can advise him is to stick to what he has been doing right. Then he will be right up there at the end of the season, of which we are already a third of the way along.
Before the season began, I predicted in this column that a 60 percent winning rate would be enough to win Superbru this season. Obviously it’s a figure that I’m still striking for, although I’m down on my goal, with 56%. Dylan is on 59%, but what is also making a difference is the three points Superbru are awarding to a correct score. I haven’t been getting enough exact scores and it’s amazing how many times a goal scored in added time after the 90 minutes of a match has cost me an exact result! I’m sure many of you feel the same way!
The most common results at a third of the way into the season, as can be seen below, are 2-1, 2-0 and 1-0, but Manchester City and Liverpool have been scoring so many goals, getting their exacts aren’t easy.
Scorelines so far this season are:
21 times: 2-1
18 times: 2-0
15 times: 1-0
11 times: 1-1, 3-1
10 times: 0-0
8 times: 3-0
6 times: 2-2
5 times: 3-2
4 times: 4-0, 4-2
2 times: 5-0, 4-1, 6-1
1 time: 5-1
