Liverpool v Arsenal

The goals keep coming in the English Premiership, and the bookies make the match of the weekend, Liverpool versus Arsenal at Anfield, a 20-1 outside bet to finish 0-0, writes GARY LEMKE.

The goalless scoreline between between the log leaders at the halfway stage of the 2018-19 campaign and the fifth-placed side is even more remote than 3-2, 4-0 or 4-1, and this is understandable given that Liverpool have scored 43 goals and Arsenal 41 so far this season. Only Manchester City (51) have scored more than Liverpool.

Probably the most common prediction on Superbru will be 2-1 to Liverpool, as the Reds are looking increasingly good and the key stat is that they have only conceded seven goals in 19 matches, while Arsenal have leaked 25. Most punters will feel that both sides will score but Liverpool will get two or three goals.

At the other end of the table, Fulham climbed off the bottom spot – they held that position on Christmas Day, and only three teams have previously escaped relegation after that – by virtue of a second successive draw, while Huddersfield have dropped to the bottom. The two strugglers meet at Craven Cottage in London, and this is the proverbial ’six-pointer’, as it’s called.

Basically, whichever side wins gets a virtual six-point swing on the other team, and in Fulham’s case it could lift them to third from bottom if Burnley’s run of poor form continues at home to a West Ham side that is almost impossible to predict this season. Claudio Ranieri is beginning to stop the bleeding at Fulham, and if he can continue to plug the defensive leaks then their supporters will be hopeful they can shake off the ‘Christmas Curse’ and secure top-flight status again next season.

The fixtures come thick and fast over this period. Boxing Day is quickly followed by this present weekend, and then there are games on New Year’s Day again. And it looks like the big winners will be Manchester United, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has started off with 5-1 and 3-1 wins, albeit against weak opposition in Cardiff and Huddersfield. His gentle introduction to the managerial seat vacated by Jose Mourinho should continue at home to Bournemouth.

Everton are another difficult side to catch right and in the game after being hammered 6-2 by Tottenham, they in turn hammered Burnley 5-1 away. Everton travel to a Brighton side that’s difficult to beat at home – they held Arsenal 1-1 in their last game at Turf Moor – so this is a tricky one to call as well.

Traditionally though, there are plenty of goals at this time of year as squad depths are tested by the matches that come thick and fast, with tired legs, injuries and suspensions taking their toll. So be sure to factor that in when making your predictions.
