Will Jose Mourinho bring his big red bus to London for the showdown at Stamford Bridge in the standout fixture of this weekend’s English Premier League matches, asks GARY LEMKE.
Chelsea vs Manchester United is the mouthwatering ‘lunchtime’ match in England, one that’s made for a TV audience of many millions worldwide, but also one of those games which are better played at lunchtime rather than in the evening so that the fans haven’t spent many hours ‘warming up’ in in the bars and pubs ahead of the game.
The bookies have installed Chelsea as one of seven odds-on favourites to win this weekend, which suggests that they reckon this should be a fairly predictable round of results. However, it’s another round of League fixtures following yet another set of international matches that will have disrupted some momentum at club level and they have to start all over again. That means that those clubs who didn’t lose a handful of players to international duty will have had longer to train together over the past 10 days or so.
Often, it’s the recipe for upset results.
Chelsea are one of three teams, along with Manchester City and Liverpool, sitting pretty at the top of the table after eight matches and 20 points – and all three are unbeaten. Man United arrive in London still hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, and Mourinho’s own sideshow with the players continues to be deemed newsworthy. The latest on the United front is that Alexis Sanchez is looking for a way out as Mourinho hasn’t ignited him since the expensive transfer from Arsenal.
Yet, the last time we saw United in action was when they came from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle at Old Trafford and that signalled, to many, that the manager hasn’t lost the dressing room. I’m expecting him to put out a team based on solid defence – playing in front of the brilliant David de Gea in goal – and a congested midfield. Mourinho won’t want width in the game and he’ll be sure to keep Eden Hazard tightly marked.
A draw would suit Mourinho and United but this is Chelsea’s acid test. They dropped points at home to Liverpool and that came on the back of a draw at West Ham and they need a win against one of the ‘big clubs’ to show that they are title contenders. Saturday’s match will reveal a lot as to their ambitions and hopes.
Elsewhere, Man City and Liverpool shouldn’t be unduly troubled getting victories, at home to Burnley and away to Huddersfield, respectively. After this round of fixtures, we will be a quarter of the way through the League season and below is a list of the results that we’ve seen so far, which helps Superbru followers get a trend of results.
As expected, 2-1 and 2-0 are the most common results so far, with 32 of the 80 games going to one of those two scorelines. Throw in 1-0 and as close as to 50% of all scorelines as is possible, have come from 1-0, 2-0 and 2-1.
Tottenham are widely expected to beat West Ham, but I’m going against the majority with this one because the Hammers held Chelsea and then beat Man United at home and despite their inconsistency, their manager Manuel Pellegrini is one of the best in the League and given the disruption of international fixtures, this is a game I think could provide the ‘upset’.
Newcastle at home to Brighton is tricky, as are Cardiff taking on Fulham and Everton against Crystal Palace, but overall I think Superbru players will be confident of a successful weekend and one in which the average will be around 7 out of 10.
