Not too many teams start off a season by winning their first six Premiership matches and in fact since 1992/93 only Chelsea (twice), Manchester City and Newcastle have managed to achieve that feat, writes GARY LEMKE.
This weekend Liverpool and Chelsea put their 100% winning records after five matches on the line, with games against Southampton (home) and West Ham (away), respectively.
Chelsea (2005/06) managed to extend their perfect start to nine matches that season, while Man City and Newcastle’s streaks were both halted after six opening victories.
So, in terms of Liverpool and Chelsea, you can see that they are starting to get into that territory when history says dropped points are becoming more likely. If it doesn’t happen this weekend it will be next weekend when Chelsea host Liverpool.
It will get a bit more tricky deeper into the season, when the weather closes in and injury, fatigue and fitness starts to take its toll, but beware of the ‘upset’ result in the round that immediately follows European action.
For now though, one can still afford to go with the form we’ve seen in the opening skirmishes of the league. Both Manchester United and Liverpool were involved in Champions League action on Tuesday night, so they’ve had time to recover and prepare for their Saturday matches, away to struggling Cardiff and home to a Southampton side that threw two points away against Brighton earlier in the week.
For Manchester United and Tottenham, there is less of a recovery period following their Champions League exertions, although on paper they should have too much for Wolves (home) and Brighton (away), respectively, while Chelsea – who won their Europa League game on Thursday 1-0 in Greece – have the toughest task of all six English teams involved in Europe this past week.
In fact, were I not a committed Chelsea fan, where I explained in my first column that even if it is Superbru I can’t go against my team, I would go for the draw in this match on Sunday. West Ham were winless in four games but were good value for their 3-1 victory at Everton last week and have a manager, Manuel Pellegrini, who won the Premier League with Man City. The Hammers won’t get relegated and they’ll take points off the ‘bigger’ sides going forward.
They will be confident hosting London rivals Chelsea and keen to put a halt to one of the only two 100% winning records in the league. If Chelsea aren’t at the top of their game they will drop points. I can see Liverpool beating Southampton easily enough to see them top the table come the end of the weekend, even if it is on goal difference.
Superbru this season introduced the three points for an exact result and punters have enjoyed some good runs, another predicting seven outright correct scores last week and a 10/10 forecast. That’s really impressive and came in a week when I thought 6/10 would be good. The average was less than six and I returned 6/10. That leaves me with a 56% winning record for the season so far and my target is 60%. If you are operating at 60% at the end of the season you will be in the top 1% in the world, so keep sticking to your strategy.
There are 330 matches remaining, so no need to panic, although I do need to get better with my exact results to make any significant moves up the leaderboards. Interestingly, the 0-0 and 2-2 draw has popped up more often so far than the 1-1, which is favouring the more adventurous punter who is seeking a draw.
