Liverpool will put the only 100% winning record in the Premier League on the line on Saturday but the big winners of this round could be Manchester City, writes GARY LEMKE.
Going into round seven of the season, the picture is beginning to look easier. Liverpool, City and Chelsea have shown enough early form to suggest they’re in for the long haul when it comes to Champions League top-four spots, while Arsenal have steadied the ship after a rough start and have won four in a row.
That’s exactly how I envisaged it, and wrote in the first week about the season unfolding that City would win the league, followed by Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham. Already, just six rounds in and those sides fill six of the top seven slots, with Watford being the early surprises.
At the bottom, I predicted that Cardiff City, Newcastle and Brighton would struggle – and two of those three clubs are in the bottom three – although Huddersfield have joined that band. In fact, Cardiff and Huddersfield have both leaked 14 goals in their six matches, which is relegation form. Cardiff’s game against Burnley is massive in the context of their season as they need to pick up points at home if they’re going to have any chance of survival.
This week Man City host Brighton and the league’s most free-scoring side will look to cash in and boost their goal difference. The bookies have priced up a 3-0 City win as ‘favourite’ at odds of 6-1, followed by 2-0 and 4-0.
City will go top this round should Liverpool not beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and Jurgen Klopp’s impressive visitors will have their supporters who believe this is the year. The trip to Chelsea is going to answer plenty of questions as to their title credentials – and it must also be remembered that Liverpool have already beaten a top-six rival, Tottenham, away from home this year. And their six wins from six is their most successful start to a Premier League season. At some stage, the 100% record must go.
Midweek saw Eden Hazard score a wonderful goal to help knock Liverpool out of the Carabao Cup at Anfield but the scores are reset to 0-0 here and this is a match where the significance and atmosphere will be ramped up several notches.
Elsewhere, Manchester United, where we saw this past week some extraordinary scenes between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba, travel to a West Ham side that is improving with each match. In last week’s column, I wrote that Chelsea were likely to drop their first points of the season, given they’d been involved in Thursday night Europa League action and that the Hammers had been impressive in beating Everton the week before.
And this match will see two managers who have won the Premier League before – Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini – and given the atmosphere at the ground, where Man United are actually the most loathed opposition to visit, this is a tough match for them. Whoever scores the first goal won’t lose this match, is the way I see it, but I’m going for Mourinho to use the crowd and atmosphere and media reports of losing the dressing room, to his advantage and sneak an important win.
