Manchester City can’t stop scoring and Manchester United can’t stop conceding. Put the two together and it would suggest that Manchester will be painted blue come Sunday night’s English Premiership match, writes GARY LEMKE.
Jose Mourinho has stopped the bleeding at United, but the manner of their recent victories still leaves plenty for their fans to be concerned about. Despite beating the likes of Newcastle, Bournemouth and drawing with Chelsea, United were poor in the first half and went behind in all those matches. The same applied to their midweek Champions League victory against Juventus; two late goals turned a likely defeat into an improbable victory.
City, on the other hand, put six past Southampton last week and then another six against Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League action. They have been miserly at the back, conceding four times in 11 League matches. United, on the other hand, have scored 18 times from 11 League matches and leaked 17 goals – and that’s even with the brilliant David de Gea wearing the keeper’s jersey.
The sideshow will be Pep Guardiola against Mourinho, but despite the turnaround in results that United have shown, their first-half performances haven’t been good enough. Concede early to City and the hosts will be over the hill and far away before the players head down the half-time tunnel.
Having said that, I’m going for United to find the net, but I fancy Guardiola’s men, with Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane attacking at pace and width down both flanks, will give the defenders nightmares and if you’re having a bet, I’d put money on Ashley Young being booked as he tries to stop Sane’s runs.
Last week looked tricky for Superbru players but there were many who will have scored well. On a personal level I got 8/10, but again a poor return when it comes to getting the exact score cost me dearly.
This week will be tougher for players. Cardiff vs Brighton is a lottery, while Southampton vs Watford, Newcastle vs Bournemouth are also matches where all three possible results will be well supported.
Liverpool, one of three unbeaten sides, should have things much their own away against bottom-placed Fulham who I thought would stay up after being promoted last season, but need to turn things around quickly. Remember that the side bottom of the table at Christmas is all but doomed to relegation.
Chelsea are at home to Everton and should also keep their unbeaten record – although the hosts were in action on Thursday night in the Europa League and a draw wouldn’t surprise me – while the third undefeated team, Man City, shouldn’t lose to United either. And then there is Arsenal, who are continuing their rise, at home to Wolves, while Tottenham are away to Crystal Palace.
If someone can get an attractive treble, I’d suggest Harry Kane and Mo Salah to score this weekend, with a booking for Ashley Young.
The most popular scoreline remains 2-1, followed by 2-0 and 1-0 and these are the scores that the majority of Superbru players are selecting. In the months ahead I’m expecting the 1-0 and 2-0 to increase because the weather starts closing in and, generally speaking, the number of matches with high scores starts to decrease.
The most common scorelines so far this season are:
19 times: 2-1
17 times: 2-0
14 times: 1-0
10 times: 3-1
8 times: 0-0, 3-0, 1-1
6 times: 2-2
5 times: 3-2
4 times: 4-0
4 times: 4-2
2 times: 5-0, 4-1, 6-1
1 time: 5-1
