After 10 rounds, the three English Premier League heavyweights are still standing, with Manchester City and Liverpool setting a relentless pace, followed closely by Chelsea, writes GARY LEMKE.
And you have to think that the free-scoring Mancunian club should make it nine wins from 11 when they take on 16th-placed Southampton at home. Pep Guardiola’s men have the look of champions – even though Liverpool fans are justified in believing they themselves are capable of something special – and are banging in goals to the tune of 2.7 per game while conceding once every three matches.
Bizarrely, only Huddersfield, Wolves and Newcastle have managed to score against City, who have now gone six matches without conceding a goal. They could well make that seven when Mark Hughes’ Saints come to the Etihad. Either way, anything other than a City victory would be a shock result.
Liverpool’s unbeaten record will be sternly tested in the way trip to Arsenal and should the Reds return from London with a victory or a draw then they have to be serious title-contenders. After all, they have already played City and Chelsea – and held both to a draw – while they beat Tottenham away and also won away at Leicester and Crystal Palace. Of all the top clubs, Liverpool’s start has been the most difficult and they have really impressed.
I’m going for Liverpool to remain unbeaten and the bookies even have them as favourites to win at Arsenal, but I’ve gone for the 2-2 draw in what should be a high-quality match featuring two attacking teams.
Chelsea will fancy their chances against Crystal Palace at home, while Manchester United are involved in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday against a dangerous Bournemouth. A damning statistic of the United season so far is that they have only kept one clean sheet in 10 matches – and that’s with David de Gea in goal – and have scored 17 while conceding 17. That’s not the form of a top-four club and while I think they’ll carve out another three points this weekend, I haven’t wavered from my pre-season view that the top six would be Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man United and Tottenham, in that order.
The show must go on in the wake of the helicopter tragedy involving Leicester City’s owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha last week and the 2015-16 league champions – it remains a modern fairytale – will unquestionably be playing in his memory when they travel to struggling Cardiff.
Leicester have been installed as favourites to beat the promoted Welsh club, and everything points to three points for the visitors, especially against a team that leaks an average of 2.3 goals a game, but I’m targeting this match as one of the ‘upsets’ and have gone with the draw.
Another two ‘upsets’ that I’ve gone for in a round where there only appear four clear-cut outcomes could be at winless Newcastle, who I’m expecting to get their first victory of the season when they host 10th-placed Watford. Only Huddersfield have scored fewer goals from their first 10 matches (four), which shows why these two clubs are the bottom two on the table. Somehow, Rafa Benitez’s men have to find the back of the net and if they can’t do so at home against Watford, they’ll become real relegation candidates.
And the final ‘upset’ for me could be at Huddersfield, who are involved in the classic ‘six-pointer’ when they host plummeting Fulham.
No team has conceded more goals in their 10 games than Fulham (28), and the third-from-bottom club come up against the team that has scored the least number. That is why I’m going for the away-from-home upset for Fulham to win, but do see Huddersfield scoring here, so I have gone for the 1-2 result.
Below you’ll find the score outcomes from the first 10 rounds of the season, with the 0-0 draw still being the most recorded stalemate and those Superbru players who are going for the double doughnuts will be benefiting with their three points for an exact score.
