Ronaldo fails on the big stage

Iceland managed to keep Cristiano Ronaldo out of the history books on Tuesday and in the process earned a point in their debut appearance at a major competition.

Ronaldo needed one goal to score at four European Championships and despite 10 shots the Real Madrid superstar failed to get his name on the scoresheet against the European minnows.

The former Manchester United forward started the match well enough but fell off the pace and finished the game with just 56 touches to his name, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre.

Ronaldo managed to direct just one of his 10 shots on target with only two coming from inside the box as his sluggish movement was easily dealt with by the spirited Icelandic defenders.

The Portugal talisman misplaced only 3 of his 31 passes but failed to assert his authority on the match and his side suffered greatly as he failed to ‘turn up’ for the big occasion. He touched the ball just four times inside the opposition box and looked a far cry from the player that regularly challenges Lionel Messi for the title of the best player on the planet.

Ronaldo had two brilliant chances in closing stages but headed straight at the goalkeeper before taking his tally of unsuccessful free kicks at major events to 34 with two dead ball failures with time up on the clock.
