On Saturday, Bidvest Wits will be aiming to secure their place in the Nedbank Cup final. Here SoccerClub picks three Wits players who could potentially guide them past Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Clever Boys are set to resume their 2019-20 campaign when they travel to the Orlando Stadium on 8 August to face off against rivals Sundowns in what is expected to be an entertaining semi-final.

Gavin Hunt’s side will be highly motivated to book their place in the final of the competition, having last won this cup competition in 2010 when they defeated AmaZulu for the title.

Here are three Wits players who could fire them past Sundowns:

1) Thulani Hlatshwayo

The veteran defender, who joined Wits from Ajax Cape Town back in the 2009-10 season, has vast leadership skills experience as he is currently both the South African national team and Wits captain.

The versatile Hlatshwayo can play at centre back or right back and is arguably Wits’ most prized asset at the moment, having already bagged five goals and made one assist from 29 appearances in all competitions this season.

The 30-year-old’s experience in leading his side from the backline will play a huge role in helping the Students defeat the Brazilians to book their place in the final for a chance to lift the title for the last time as a team.

2) Deon Hotto

Since moving to Wits from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2018, the Namibia forward has adapted well to life at his new club and proved his worth by scoring 14 goals and assisting a further 21 from 66 appearances across all competitions for Wits.

The 28-year-old could play a major role in helping the Clever Boys reach the final as they continue their bid to claim the first piece of silverware since winning the Telkom Knockout Cup trophy and Absa Premiership title during the 2016-17 season.

3) Thabang Monare

The 30-year-old is a key member of the Wits squad in the heart of their midfield and has the ability to win the ball in the middle of the park and spread the play across the field.

Monare has been impressive since joining the students from Jomo Cosmos during the 2016-17 season, having turned out 117 appearances across all competitions, while scoring four goals and assisting a further seven in the process.

Despite not being a frequent scorer, Monare can command the midfield by creating opportunities for his side with his technical ability.
