Olivier Giroud equalled Thierry Henry’s record as France’s all-time top goalscorer following his brace in their 4-1 victory over Australia in their opening World Cup 2022 Group D encounter on Tuesday.

Craig Goodwin gave Australia a surprise lead at Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar after just nine minutes of play.

Injuries plagued France’s preparation for the tournament, and left-back Lucas Hernandez was injured during the play that led to the goal.

In the 32nd minute, Giroud scored his 50th international goal with a simple finish to put France ahead for the first time.

Kylian Mbappe scored in the second half, and Olivier Giroud sealed the victory to equal Henry’s record of 51 goals for France.

The victory propels them to the top of Group D after Denmark and Tunisia tied 0-0.

“It is nice to score four goals, even if we could have had more, and it’s a really good start for us,” said France coach Didier Deschamps.

At the age of 36, the AC Milan striker Giroud is also the oldest player to score for France at a World Cup.

“He deserves respect for performing at the very highest level for so many years and delivering even when nobody seemed to believe in him,” said teammate Benjamin Pavard.

“I am so pleased for him because he is a great guy. I hope he keeps going and beats more records.”
