Wonderkid Endrick scored his first goal for Brazil as Seleção condemned England to a narrow 1-0 defeat in an international friendly match played at Wembley.

With ten minutes remaining, England custodian Jordan Pickford made a save, but Vinicius Jr., a 17-year-old substitute, broke free and finished easily from close range. It appeared as though the match would end in a draw.

It ended a disappointing evening for England. They lost captain Kyle Walker to a hamstring injury early on, which made their defense—Harry Maguire in particular—look vulnerable.

Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United made his debut right away for England, while young midfield sensation Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa earned their first debuts as replacements.

Brazil had the better of the first-half opportunities, and the teams’ experimental approach was a reflection of the high calibre of play. The finest chance for England went to Ollie Watkins, who scored brilliantly from close range; Brazil’s best chance went to Raphinha, who missed the mark after a weak backpass from Maguire.

Jude Bellingham, the outstanding player for England, endured severe physical abuse the entire time until he was replaced, and Endrick’s winning put the enormous gathering of Brazil supporters into a frenzy of joy.

It marked England’s first loss at Wembley in twenty-one matches since their October 2020 Uefa Nations League loss to Denmark.
