Oliver Bekker carded a bogey-free 10-under-par 62 on Course 2 at Mount Edgecombe Country Club to take a one-stroke lead into the final day of the Sun Sibaya Challenge.

Bekker’s flawless 62 leaves him on 14 under par for the R750,000 tournament, and it’s his best-ever round on tour.

‘Yeah, it’s my best round on tour by two shots. I played really well today and gave myself a lot of chances. I think I missed one green and that was on the edge of the green anyway,’ he said.

At 14 under after two rounds at Mount Edgecome’s Course 2, the scoring, despite some inclement weather on day one and 34 degrees Celsius heat on day two, has been extremely low.

‘At one stage today I thought 18 under would win the tournament. I did think to myself that we needed to get to 18 or 20 under,’ he said.

Bekker’s performance so far this week comes at a crucial time, as a trip to the European Tour’s stage two Qualifying School beckons in Spain next week.

‘I haven’t had a great year this year. The win at Sun City was kind of out of the blue. I’ve built a little bit on that and hopefully I can keep on building. I’ve got Tour School next week, so three good weeks in a row would be really good for me.’

Peter Karmis is Bekker’s closest challenger on 13 under after firing a second-round 68, while Le Roux Ferreira and Madalitso Muthiya share third place on 11 under.
