A double bogey on the 17th hole prevented South Africa’s Jacques Kruyswijk from securing the round of the day at the Open de Espana on Saturday.

Kruyswijk’s 66 was tied second when it comes to moving day’s best as he moved up 29 places in Madrid.

The Q School graduate opened with a stunning six straight birdies to vault up the leaderboard and added another birdie on the par-three 9th to go out in 29 as he quickly became the name talked about during round three.

He left the 10th hole with a birdie, after an eagle there on Friday and a birdie on Thursday, to firmly put himself in contention for a 59.

Unfortunately for his hopes of reaching the tour’s most memorable number as well as moving even closer to the leaders, a bogey at the 11th halted his progress. That stumble was followed up by six straight pars as he consolidated his early electric start.

Disaster struck on the penultimate hole as he walked off the green with a five on the short par-three 17th. A birdie to close helped get one of those shots back as Kruyswijk finished six shots off the pace set by Ireland’s Paul Dunne.

Three shots behind Kruyswijk is Erik van Rooyen after a third round 70 with Dean Burmester one behind him after a 71. Joining Burmester at -7 through 54 holes is George Coetzee, who finished with a 71 on Saturday.

Richard Sterne, Brandon Stone and Darren Fichardt are at -6 with 18 holes to play.
