Johannesburg is known for summer thunderstorms, but the torrential rains that hit the City of Gold on Tuesday were a spectacle. Part of the Bucchleugh interchange washed away and motorists were caught in certain low-level crossings.

‘We’ve issued a warning of possible flooding over most areas in Gauteng, especially low-lying areas of the province,’ said Wayne venter from the SA weather service.

The Sunshine Tour delayed the Joburg Open qualifier after rain soaked Houghton Golf Club. The Operations Manager, Dirk Cloete, took the following picture of the 18th green.

There were similar issues at Glendower Golf Club, where the inaugural Sunshine Ladies Tour Classic was put on hold after rivers burst their banks at the parklands venue.

England’s Rebecca Hudson, who has top-fives from her last two starts on Tour, posted the following Tweet of some ski fanatics enjoying a unique opportunity.

Ashleigh Buhai was pleased to get a day off after some heavy travel: she won the Cape Town Open two weeks ago, played the Australia this weekend, then flew to Johannesburg.

‘I jetted back from the LPGA Australian Open to make the Tuesday start, so a few more hours to shake the jetlag is really welcome,’ she said. ‘Of course, playing 36 holes on Wednesday will be taxing, but by tomorrow I’ll be up for it.’

The Joburg Open will be played at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, where the European Tour players experienced the rains down in Africa.
