Bernhard Langer is undoubtedly the man to beat on the PGA Tour Champions and he started 2017 with an eight under par 64 on Thursday to share first place at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship.

The two-time Masters winner has triumphed in seven majors on the senior circuit and shown no signs of slowing down in Hawaii this week, where he shared the top spot with Marco Dawson and Duffy Waldorf after round one.

The ever-bright John Daly was also in form during the first round and shot 65 to trail by one stroke, his best start to a season since 2005.

The American played a flawless back nine at Hualalai Golf Club that included five birdies to make the clubhouse in 66, which put him in a tie for fourth place with Olin Browne, Gene Sauers, and Fred Couples.

David Frost was also on the march in Hawaii and shot 67 to share eight place, two shots off the pace and set for a good result to start the new year.
