Bubba Watson was a shoo-in for a Ryder Cup pick, having played for Team USA on three occasions and having a good relationship with the other Americans.
He was left out of the crew set for Hazeltine later this week after Davis Love III chose Ryan Moore as the final captain’s pick on Monday.
A day later Love picked Watson as his final vice captain for the tournament, including the two-time Masters champion in the festivities.
‘Bubba obviously disappointed not to be on the team,’ said Love. ‘But as our team has really bonded together over the last couple months, Bubba has offered a couple times to come and be one of our assistant captains, and I told him we had an extra red cart and we’d love to have him. So he’s back at the hotel trying to get his clothes fit and get ready for assistant captain duties, much like Jim Furyk.’
Watson played the Ryder Cup tournament in 2010, 2012 and 2014, and the Presidents Cup in 2011 and 2015. He will take on leadership responsibilities this year as a vice captain, joining Furyk, Tom Lehman, Steve Stricker, and Tiger Woods.
