Hideki Matsuyama shot 66 at Sheshan International Golf Club on Sunday to end an incredible showing at the WGC-HSBC Champions on 23 under par.

‘Winning today, I feel has got me closer to being able to compete a lot better in the Major tournaments,’ he said. ‘My next goal is, of course, to win a Major and I’m going to do all that I can to prepare well for that.’

Elite ball-striking helped the Japanese 24-year-old to go seven shots clear of second-placed Daniel Berger and Henrik Stenson, while Rory McIlroy and Ross Fisher shared fourth place on 15 under par.

Branden Grace returned to form with a Sunday round of 67 to reach two under par for the tournament, which equated to a share of 30th place alongside Charl Schwartzel and three others.

Dean Burmester shared 35th place in his WGC debut on a one-under-par total, while George Coetzee was tied for 40th at level par.
