Hideki Matsuyama was the first player into the clubhouse on four under par on Thursday at the PGA Tour Championship, where he co-led Dustin Johnson and Kevin Chappell.
Matsuyama shot 66 at East Lake Golf Club that included no drop on the back nine. His incredible ball striking yielded six birdies during the round.
South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel struggled to get moving on the front side and made four bogeys on the outward nine. A double at the 13th sealed the round as a bad one for the 2011 Masters winner, who shared 24th place.
Phil Mickelson was also four over par after a rollercoaster 18.
Johnson, a hot favourite coming into the week, made one bogey on Thursday. He birdied both of East Lake’s par fives, taking advantage of his length to share the top spot.
