Jason Day claimed the Wells Fargo Championship for his second win of the season leaving Charl Schwartzel to rue his poor start on Sunday.

Starting the final round four back, Schwartzel bogeyed the 1st before a triple bogey on the 2nd saw him fall rapidly from contention.

Birdies at 5th and 7th sandwiched a bogey on the short 6th before a couple of pars to close his outward nine in three over par.

The 2011 Masters champion got his round to +1 with birdies at the 10th and 11th holes but closed with seven straight pars and a final round 72 for a tally of -5; seven behind Day, who finished with a 69 and four rounds in the 60s.

For Schwartzel, the top 10 finish after last week’s third place was a step in the right direction after seeing his world ranking plummet this year.

For Day, it was a boost in self-belief after he dropped into a share of the lead on the back nine before turning on the style with a display in ‘clutch golf’ to get over the line and head to TPC Sawgrass for the Players in confident spirit.
