Zach Johnson moved into a share of the lead at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio while Ernie Els produced a 69 to move steadily up the leaderboard, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

Els turned things around on Friday with a 69, four better than his opening effort, to move into a share of 25th place. The Big Easy, starting on the 10th, eagled the 14th despite finding the rough off the tee.

His approach to the par five from 234 yards settled just over 15 feet from the hole which he made light work of with the putter to get his tournament score in positive numbers. He holed a putt of similar length to move to -3 for the day.

A bogey at the 1st was cancelled out by a birdie at the 4th, which came despite being bunkered off the tee as he sank a putt worth all of 30 feet, as he signed for a 69 after a string of five pars to close.

Els’ tally of -2 through 36 is one better Dylan Frittelli (72-71) and two ahead of Retief Goosen (73-71) with Tyrone van Aswegen heading home (80-71).

At the top of the leaderboard, Johnson shot a second round 65 to share the lead with Ryan Moore (67) at -9 with Grayson Murray and Andrew Landry one back.
