A record total of 11 South African golfers will be in action at next week’s PGA Championship when the second Major of the year tees off.

The golfing fraternity will pin its focus on the Ocean Course at the Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina, where four rounds of action-packed golf awaits.

Following tremendous success in recent weeks, a big contingent of SA players qualified for the PGA Championship.

The 10 players currently in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings, plus the exemption of Charl Schwartzel, make it the most South Africans to ever compete at a PGA Championship.

Dean Burmester broke into the top 100 after his T4 finish at last weekend’s Canary Islands Championship, while Garrick Higgo shot to a career-high 51st position with his win in Tenerife.

Erik van Rooyen (75), Daniel van Tonder (77) and Dylan Frittelli (79) will all be in action, while Compleat Golfer playing editor Brandon Stone (85) is also set for a big week.

Branden Grace (91), Burmester (93) and George Coetzee (98) just about secured their spots with Louis Oosthuizen (32) and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (40) completing the local charge.

Collin Morikawa will head into the event as the defending champion, while all the big guns are expected to battle it out for victory.

It will be Higgo and Van Tonder’s maiden appearances at a Major with Burmester only competing in 2018 US Open before, while Stone secured a T12 finish at the 2018 edition of the PGA Championship.
