Justin Rose has chosen to end his 2016 season and rest a back injury that has forced the Olympic champion to miss the European Tour Finals Series.

The seven-time PGA Tour winner struggled with disc herniation at the PGA Championship and has not fully recovered. At the conclusion of the Ryder Cup he chose to heal.

‘Following an intense summer schedule and discussion with my team, I have decided to take the next eight weeks off for rest and recovery. At this point in my career, it’s important to invest in my body,’ said the 36-year-old.

The jam-packed schedule of 2016, which included the Olympics sandwiched between two majors, meant that Rose took strain while competing at the highest level.

‘I worked hard to be able to return for the US Open, but my ongoing tournament schedule combined with heavy preparation for the Olympics did not allow for full and proper recovery,’ he said.

Rose is also one of four players who host the British Masters, which he will not play in.

‘The remainder of the year has such a great run of tournaments, and I am very disappointed to have to miss out on some of them. The importance of the European Tour’s Final Series and my relationship with the British Masters make those tournaments particularly tough to miss,’ he said.
