A glittering array of South African sports stars have joined business giants and the local golf community in rallying around conservation with the launch of the new Conservation Cup golf tournament at Pearl Valley this September.

The Conservation Cup will be a 27-hole team tournament contested by two teams – each captained by a sporting icon – of 36 players each who will play three nine-hole sessions on Pearl Valley’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course on Tuesday 3 September. This will be followed by a gala dinner and fundraiser, with coverage on SuperSport.

The proceeds from the event will go in support of The Fisher Foundation’s ongoing work as a non-profit to focus on conservation and education among the youth living in communities adjacent to South Africa’s national parks and protected wildlife areas. The ultimate goal of the foundation is to empower the youth to become active custodians of South Africa’s precious natural heritage.

The inaugural Conservation Cup and its vision has drawn strong support from the South African sports community, many of whom drive their own conservation efforts and are equally passionate about the protection of South Africa’s wildlife from poaching and other threats.

The Conservation Cup will feature a field including former Proteas cricket greats Graeme Smith, Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis will join rugby stars Schalk Burger Jnr, Schalk Brits, Juandré Kruger, Gary Teichmann, André Joubert, Robbie Fleck, Hanyani ‘Shimmy’ Shimange, Gcobani Bobo, Odwa Ndungane and Akona Ndungane as well as former Bafana Bafana legends Mark Fish and Neil Tovey. Springboks Ntuthuko Mchunu and Phepsi Buthelezi will also be there in support and as ambassadors of recent projects by The Fisher Foundation.

“Sports legends have a voice that can effect change and we are immensely grateful to the South African sports community for their overwhelming support of the inaugural Conservation Cup,” said Richard Fisher, the founder and Executive Chairman of City Logistics who, through his personal foundation, has directed his focus towards conservation and community upliftment.

“Investing in conservation awareness during the formative years of our children’s lives will translate into a more sustainable future for generations. We have to be future-focused. This mindset works in business and the same approach will create a world that we can proudly bequeath to our children. It is my heartfelt wish that through constructive partnerships and initiatives we can make a meaningful difference.”

The Conservation Cup is proudly supported by Investec, Heineken Silver, Amarula Gin, Bain’s Whisky, City Venture Capital, Ineos Grenadier, City Logistics, Flooid, Peter Millar, Olijvenkraal, Fyre, Forsyth & Nash, Skukuza Golf Club, AB Phalaborwa, Mala Mala, Europcar, Fastway, G/Fore, Callaway, Pearl Valley and Yoco.
