Tiger Woods is ‘awake, responsive and recovering’ in the Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre after a serious car accident on Tuesday.

The 15-time Major champion was involved in a single-car collision in Los Angeles, on his way to a shoot with GolfTV and Golf Digest.

Firefighters and paramedics had to remove Woods from his vehicle with the jaws of life, said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The Tiger Woods PR team, however, released a statement on Wednesday morning after the golfer underwent extensive surgery on his lower right leg and ankle.

‘Mr Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremities that were treated during emergency surgery by by orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level-one trauma centre,’ said Dr Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer and interim CEO at the centre.

Woods was stabilised after a rod was inserted into his tibia, which had fractures on both the upper and lower portions.

The statement further read that Woods was awake, responsive and recovering, thanks to the incredible medical assistance he had received.
