Tyrone van Aswegen had a superb weekend at TPC Kuala Lumpur to share seventh place at the CIMB Classic, where American Justin Thomas successfully defended his title.

‘It’s great to win here again. It’s obviously a place I’m very comfortable with and I think a lot of that is because of just everything that goes on here. I mean, the fan base and the tournament that Tom puts on, everything, is done very well,’ said the new champ.

Van Aswegen played rounds of 69 and 70 to make the weekend tied for 16th place, then made the most of his Saturday in Malaysia with a round of 66.

He wrapped up the week with a round of 68 on Sunday for a 15-under par total and a share of seventh place alongside Australia’s Scott Hend.

Thomas made the course look simple and shot 64 on both Thursday and Sunday on his way to a three-stroke victory on 23 under par.

‘This is a huge win for me, because I’ve never really played with a lead like that, and was able to close it off. So I’ll be able to hopefully build on that going forward and look forward to coming back next year,’ he said.

Branden Grace struggled to get his whole game firing, but carded consecutive 69s at the weekend to share 33rd place with Vijay Singh, Tony Finau, Brian Harman and Jim Herman.

Ernie Els battled through the final two rounds in six over par to share 72nd place.
