Caf president Patrice Motsepe has revealed that the organisation will soon announce details of the proposed African Super League, adding it’s something exciting with huge potential.

Despite the massive backlash earlier this year when European clubs attempted to create an exclusive Super League, with the idea blocked before it even started, Caf looks set to go ahead with the creation of Africa’s version of a Super League.

Motsepe admitted back in October that the continent needs a tournament which could provide the platform for clubs to break out of financial poverty and create their own wealth.

“The super league for Africa is a new competition because all of those other competitions are locked into agreements and the money they get is not enough,” he said at the time while speaking at a news conference in Ghana.

At the Caf extraordinary general assembly on Friday, the South African businessman admitted that the organisation is looking to finalise the creation of a Super League and will announce the details soon.

“This matter is still with the executive committee and today was an endorsement of this clear understanding that we should look into this because it is an important competition, which will benefit African football,” he told journalists.

“It will improve the quality and generate income, not just for those clubs and countries that are participating, but for those that aren’t participating as well. We will make an announcement in due course in terms of what additional information we want to provide about the Super League. But it’s something that is exciting and has huge potential. We took the decision to say the exco must continue with the good work it’s been doing.”
