Granit Xhaka put in a man-of-the match performance during Switzerland’s 1-0 victory over Albania in their opening match of Euro 2016.
According to SASoccermag.co.za’s Opta-powered match centre, the Arsenal midfielder was the standout performer during his side’s Group A victory.
Xhaka’s contribution in the heart of the midfield will continue to be vital to his national team’s cause moving forward in the tournament.
His 129 touches during the match played a vital role for the Swiss team and he completed 101 of his 115 passes.
Occupying a deep-lying role, he didn’t get much many opportunities to shoot at goal against the Albanians, but he did show a wide and impressive range of passing from the base of midfield; majority of which from his favoured left side.
The Swiss midfielder defensive work rate did not go unnoticed, winning nine out of 16 duels, while he also won 100% of his tackles; winning three out of three tackles he committed himself to.
As early as the third minute, the always-aggressive Xhaka made his presence felt with a crunching ball and all tackle on his opposite number to set the tone.
Going forward the man-of-the-match provided two shots at goal, while creating three chances for the Swiss side, showing he is a real asset to Switzerland moving forward.
The £30-million Arsenal signing was clearly given orders to be the primary spoiler as he appeared to relish his defensive responsibilities, something that should be music to the ears of every Gunners fan watching.
