Real Madrid were forced to settle for their second consecutive draw at Las Palmas as Barcelona moved to within a point of the La Liga table toppers.

Los Blancos, who had won 16 of their previous league outings before Wednesday, were seemingly in control of their encounter against Las Palmas before Sergio Araujo secured his side an unlikely draw.

The match was overshadowed somewhat by Cristiano Ronaldo’s annoyance at being substituted by Zinedine Zidane, the first time the Portugal forward has been brought off for tactical reasons since he joined the club seven years ago.

Real’s draw helped Barcelona and Atletico Madrid move within sight of the leaders.

The Catalan giants made light work of Sporting Gijon and a first half blitz set up the 5-0 win at El Molinon.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring before Rafinha got on the scoresheet within three minutes. Gijon were in trouble when Alberto Lora was sent off as Neymar netted a brace before Arda Turan completed the rout.

Atletico needed France striker Antoine Griezmann to rescue them against a 10-man Deportivo La Coruna as his 70th minute strike was good enough to seal the 1-0 win. Griezmann’s fifth goal of the season helped Atletico to move within two points of Zidane’s Real Madrid.
